Technology The most efficient lenses in the world are nature’s eyes, whether bird, fish, or human eyes. By making small changes in their shape, nature’s lenses can be tuned to optimize images over various focal distances. Traditional optical design tries to achieve similar results by combining glass or plastic elements that must move back and forth to accomplish focus or zoom. A typical traditional lens system can require many elements to operate properly. Rhevision’s game changing technology, spun out of University of California San Diego’s optics laboratory, combines fluidics and optics in a unique manner, much like nature, allowing us to make highly tunable, miniature optical lenses that require far fewer elements than traditional lenses, and that can be manufactured through a low cost manufacturing process. Our lenses mimic the eye in nature, through the movement of small amounts of fluid into or out of a lens chamber. Because of our unique solution, our lenses enjoy a tuning range of 200 dioptres, or 10 times the tuning range of a human eye. Consequently our lenses can be tuned through microscopic, macroscopic and out through telescopic ranges. In short, Rhevision has developed a disruptive miniature lens technology that is unreachable by any existing technology. Our lens technology mimics the action of the eye in nature through movement of small amounts of fluid into and out of a covered chamber. The following diagram describes how the technology works:
In the top illustration, the lens is in its natural resting position with the lens membrane laying flat on the enclosure. In the middle and bottom illustrations, as fluid is pumped into or out of the enclosure, the lens membrane expands to form either a concave or convex shape. By creating that shape, a Rhevision lens enables a lens system to achieve focus or zoom without any moving parts. Because of Rhevision’s unique solution, our lenses enjoy a tuning range of approximately 200 dioptres or 10 times the tuning range of the human eye. Consequently, our lenses can be tuned through microscopic, macroscopic and out through telescopic ranges. The salient technology features of our lenses that differentiate Rhevision from its competitors include:
In short, Rhevision Technology has developed a disruptive, game changing technology that significantly enhances tunable camera lenses for the fast-growing handheld device, cell phone camera, video conferencing and security markets. |
